Alpha House – Amazon Originals Pilot

Alpha House - Amazon Comedy Pilots Poster

Yesterday I posted some of my thoughts on the recent Amazon Comedy Pilot episode of the Zombieland TV Series.  Needless to say, I was probably more impressed with the concept of Amazon opening up these shows to streaming audiences to get a vibe for which shows might get a possible green light than the Zombieland show itself.

I watched a few other comedy pilots around the same time, so in this post I’m going to give some brief thoughts on the second show I watched – Alpha House staring John Goodman.

It was a good few months ago now that I actually watched the show, so I’ll keep this post brief with mainly the bullet points about what I liked or didn’t like about the show – essentially the information I sent to Amazon after watching it.

Alpha House is about four senators living together in a rented house in Washington DC.  Although it doesn’t sound like a good idea for a show, I can tell you its pretty well executed and shows a lot of promise actually.  I’m not 100 percent sure yet if this show is “for me” but given a few episodes it could well be, but of course it would take for the show to be green lit for that to happen.

I did laugh during the show and generally speaking I thought the casting of the actors was brilliant and the overall quality seemed high.  There was also a brilliant cameo from a well known comedy actor who I will not name here as I don’t really want to spoil it, even though it’s basically the opening scene.  I kind of wish he was in it more.  Maybe if the show gets picked up they could write him into it with a sort of weekly “visit” so-to-speak.

Anyway, here’s what I sent to Amazon in my feedback about the show: –

What do I like about the show?

  • Strong cast of actors
  • Excellent production values, the quality of the show is clearly visible on screen
  • Excellent writing and dialogue
  • Good concept for a show – at least for 1 or 2 seasons, but I’m not sure how it would continue beyond the elections?
  • Intelligent and funny
  • The 20-30 minute running time is ideal

What do I like least about the show?

  • Couple of slow points for a show with a short running time
  • Needs more <actor’s name removed to avoid the spoiler of the cameo roll> – If he’s in it as a regular character this show could be a winner
